Making Placements Work (Professional Skills)

This interactive workshop is exclusive to PDA Trainee Pharmacist members and will include group discussions and activities.

Wed 9th September 2026 (6:30pm - 8:30pm)

Placements are a key part of the foundation training year, offering valuable hands-on experience in real-world settings. This workshop will explore practical strategies to help trainees maximise their learning during placements, including how to set clear learning objectives, how to engage proactively within teams and how to give and receive feedback effectively.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Recognise the role of placements in developing professional skills, confidence and early career direction
  • Develop practical strategies that maximise learning during placements
  • Explore how to optimise learning conversations and feedback, including progress reviews and raising concerns.

Content/Topics:

  • Setting clear learning objectives and personal development plans
  • Using reflective practice to consolidate learning and refine learning goals
  • Approaches for giving and receiving feedback and raising concerns
  • Top tips for optimising progress reviews and appraisals.

By the end of the workshop, trainees will feel more confident to approach their placements with purpose, maximising learning in diverse environments, and using feedback as a powerful tool for ongoing development.

This session is mapped to GPhC standards and PSNI principles for use as part of your professional development portfolio.

“Placements work best when trainees take an active role in shaping their learning experience. When every interaction and activity becomes a learning moment, routine experiences become powerful stepping stones for future development.”

Michelle Yeomans, PDA Pharmacist Teacher Practitioner Coordinator.
