Since the ballot outcome, the PDA team and Superdrug senior management have been negotiating the terms of the recognition agreement, which sets out how the new arrangement will work.
Whilst talks are still progressing, the PDA is hopeful to work with Superdrug to agree a framework that works for both employer and pharmacists, as has been achieved at other pharmacy employers across the sector. The PDA’s approach is always to further pharmacists’ interests by finding ways to work with management and focus on shared interests, to support employers in their long-term prosperity to promote job security and advancement for members, while also ensuring individuals are treated fairly.
The PDA believes both parties can and should work together constructively to find mutually satisfactory solutions to problems, for the sake of members and employees. However, if such an environment cannot be created, the PDA will need to find alternative ways to highlight and resolve the same issues.
If the PDA team cannot come to an agreement with Superdrug regarding the recognition agreement, there is an alternative path that sees the Central Arbitration Committee (CAC) appoint a default model of recognition. This would be difficult for both employers and the PDA to comply with. The default model is designed to be demanding as a way to encourage employers and trade unions to reach a suitable agreement and work together. The PDA’s preference will always be to work with an employer to find a bespoke agreement that works best for both sides, but this will never be at the expense of a good deal for members.
The PDA held a member meeting on the 2 April, to hear from members, and ensure they are involved and informed in the process. Pharmacists at Superdrug can also email [email protected] to ask any questions about this development.
