The Copenhagen Declaration on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) was signed by the PDA at the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) Global congress earlier this month, during the plenary session “Acting together for One Health: Strengthening global collaboration to combat AMR”.
As the 2025 congress was hosted in Denmark the global call to action was co-signed by FIP president Paul Sinclair, Stine Hasling Mogensen, Chairman of Pharmadanmark; and Jesper Gulev Larsen, president of the Association of Danish Pharmacies, before other FIP membership organisations, including the PDA, added their support.

The declaration outlines clear priorities to address antimicrobial resistance, including global partnership building, promoting vaccination and rational antimicrobial use, protecting medicine supply chains, and advancing evidence on stewardship and outcomes.

Mark Koziol, PDA Chairman, who is also a member of the FIP Council, signed for the PDA. The PDA has been a member of FIP continuously since September 2022 and represents pharmacists from across the United Kingdom (UK) and the crown dependencies.
The Copenhagen declaration on AMR says:
Together, we will combat antimicrobial resistance by ensuring that antimicrobials remain effective for future generations. We will work toward a world where every person has access to essential medicines, safe treatments, and the right care at the right time, leaving no one behind.
We, as FIP members and leaders, commit to supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in relation to health and well-being, by addressing AMR. Together, we will reduce inequalities in access to medicines including vaccines, improve health outcomes, and ensure the responsible use of antimicrobials to meet the SDGs for health, equity, and sustainability.
To achieve these aims, we support the following priorities:
- Supporting Global Efforts and Building partnerships to Combat AMR
- Promoting Vaccination and Disease Prevention to Combat AMR
- Promoting the Rational Use of Antimicrobials based on diagnostic evidence and enhance Public Health Education and Empowerment
- Strengthening the Global Medicine Supply Chain and use of innovative technologies
- Generating Evidence on AMR Interventions and Impact
The PDA joined FIP with the belief that being able to collaborate and learn from pharmacy organisations from other parts of the world is a good thing for PDA members. Supporting the declaration is yet another way in which the PDA can add the contribution of pharmacists in the UK to the global conversation about a such a critical issue for pharmacy.
