VACCINATIONS: All vaccinations delivered by suitably trained pharmacists have always been covered by indemnity insurance as part of the standard PDA membership apart from Covid-19. For new membership renewals after January 1st, 2026, Covid-19 vaccinations are now also automatically covered.

PDA responds to suggestions that up to 50% of central NHS England/DHSC jobs could be cut

The PDA will support individual members impacted by changes.

It has been reported that the government intends to half the number of central NHS England roles, with the restructuring also believed to effect staff at the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). This would be the most significant change in staffing for a generation.

Several senior NHS leaders have already announced they will be leaving alongside the outgoing NHSE CEO, Amanda Pritchard, while the interim CEO for NHSE, Sir Jim Mackay and new NHSE Chair, Penny Dash take over.

The PDA recognises that resourcing should be directed to where it can make the most positive sustainable difference, which is often at the frontline, and that duplication between NHSE and DHSE that controls it can be wasteful. However, an effective central function is very necessary in what is the largest employer in Europe and the centre still needs to be able to make its necessary contribution.

The PDA represents pharmacists wherever they practice or are employed and that includes within the central NHS functions. The PDA will support individuals impacted by this announcement and will enable them to understand and exercise their rights as employees.

A general briefing regarding redundancies, which PDA members at the NHS or DHSE may find helpful, is available to download here. PDA members who have already contacted the PDA for advice on this situation do not need to get in contact again unless there are developments with their situation.

Members can contact the PDA in confidence to talk about any workplace concern or query. The PDA is also concerned for the general wellbeing of members affected by this announcement. In addition to the support and representation available from the PDA, pharmacists should consider the personal support provided by Pharmacist Support.
